Survey Technician II

MAJOR FUNCTION

Survey Technician II performs skilled field support for land surveying operations under the direction of supervisory staff. Building upon prior surveying experience, this position assists with the collection of accurate field data, operation of survey instruments and equipment, and completion of assigned survey activities. The position is expected to continue developing technical proficiency and knowledge of land surveying principles and practices, with increasing responsibility and independence in field assignments.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

• Various manual labor tasks (dig, clear brush, drive stakes, carry survey equipment, etc.).

• Operate basic equipment (prism pole, level rod, tribrach, etc.).

• Operate advanced equipment (begin to acquire experience operating total station, robotic 

total station, RTK, etc.)

• Stock and Load vehicles (load and unload equipment, supplies, drinking water, and other 

essential materials).

• Basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment (clean, care for, and safeguard equipment and 

vehicles).

• Safety (performs work in a safe manner, sets up safety equipment and obeys all safety 

regulations).

• Perform other work-related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Knowledge of basic mathematical principles and the ability to develop proficiency in mathematics applicable to surveying, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

• Ability to follow and accurately carry out oral and written instructions.

• Ability to learn and apply the principles, practices, methods, and terminology of land surveying.

• Ability to develop proficiency in the proper use, care, and operation of surveying instruments and equipment.

• Ability to prepare and maintain clear and accurate survey notes and field documentation.

• Ability to continue developing the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform field survey assignments with minimal supervision.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.

• Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in varying terrain, weather conditions, and outdoor environments.

• Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move items weighing up to thirty (30) pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of an accredited high school/trade school or possession of an equivalent diploma.

• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida’s Driver’s License.

• Must have a minimum of six (6) months of surveying experience.

• A comparable combination of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications, except where licensure is required

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• This full-time position is based in Polk County, Florida. Flexibility may be required to support emergencies outside of regular business hours.

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
