Children's National Hospital in Washington D.C. has an open Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Position for its 2-year training program. We have an excellent, comprehensive training program that has produced several leaders in the field of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
This is a great opportunity for someone who may be interested in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery since our institution was named one of the Best Hospital for Cardiology & Heart Surgery in US News and World Report 2025-2026 rankings. The ideal candidate will be interested in pursuing a clinical and academic career in neonatal and infant cardiac surgery, pediatric heart transplantation, and ventricular assist devices. During this two-year training program, you will be responsible for delivering clinical excellence in and out of the operating room, providing exceptional patient and family experiences, contributing to a collaborative work culture, and providing innovative care through research, clinical studies, and trials.
This fellowship offers training in all aspects of congenital cardiac surgery. Learning occurs mostly in the operating room, but there are also didactic teaching sessions with all members of the attending surgical team. Fellows will provide support to the advanced practice providers who manage patients on the cardiac unit. Clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inpatient and outpatient care in cardiac surgery services, rounding in the ICU and other inpatient units, thoracic organ procurement, assistance with thoracic transplants and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist device (VAD), and a wide range of cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures. Additionally, our department has one of the busiest hybrid programs for high-risk infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. You will participate in the management of patients in cardiovascular surgery and thoracic transplant services in the ICU, other inpatient units, and clinic. You will be able to perform pediatric cardiac surgery procedures under the supervision of four experienced cardiac surgeons in the field based on a fellowship curriculum and the Division Chief's discretion. This position includes in-house call and ECMO cannulation coverage.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have completed 3 years of Cardiac Surgery Residency in an approved training program before October 1, 2026.
- Additional pediatric cardiac surgery experience (preferred).
- Must have three (3) letters of recommendations from training program.
- Must have completed medical school in the U.S. or Canada or be ECFMG certified if an international medical graduate.
- Must be successfully able to obtain a District of Columbia medical license prior to starting fellowship training.
- Must have successfully passed all three steps of the USMLE.
