The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is one of the world's largest international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (INGO), at work in more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. A force for humanity, IRC employees deliver lasting impact by restoring safety, dignity and hope to millions. If you're a solutions-driven, passionate change-maker, come join us in positively impacting the lives of millions of people world-wide for a better future.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) began operations in Burundi in 1996, amid civil war and widespread instability. From the outset, the organization engaged in life-saving emergency interventions, providing immediate assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons. The sociopolitical and security crisis led to significant population movements.

Today, Burundi hosts more than 130,000 refugees, primarily from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). At the same time, more than 250,000 Burundians have been forced to flee their country and currently live in exile, mainly in Tanzania, Rwanda, and the DRC. Within Burundi itself, an estimated 100,000 people have also been displaced, largely due to the effects of climate change, such as flooding.

To address these challenges, the IRC has progressively expanded and adapted its programs to meet the growing needs of affected populations. The organization implements integrated interventions focused on emergency humanitarian response, while strengthening community resilience through protection, health, and economic wellbeing and education initiatives. The Burundi country program currently implements 9 projects with an annual operating budget of approximately USD 10 million.
