In addition to courses in those areas, this instructor will have the opportunity to teach a range of undergraduate general education courses in writing and literature.
The Humanities Division is particularly interested in candidates who bring a thoughtful, considered perspective on teaching writing in the current moment, including the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. We seek someone who can help students navigate what it means to develop as writers and thinkers in an era when the nature of writing itself is being actively contested and redefined.
As Program Director, this individual will play a central leadership role in shaping the future of English at Greenville University, providing vision and direction for the English curriculum across the institution and contributing to a thriving and collaborative Humanities Division.
Requirements
Full-time faculty load is 12 credit hours per semester, usually consisting of two to three general education courses and one or two upper-division courses. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Program Director will carry administrative responsibilities as outlined below. Other responsibilities will include student advisement and regular participation in the Humanities Division and institutional governance.
Program Director Responsibilities
As Director of English Programs, this faculty member will:
- Provide institutional leadership for the English curriculum, including oversight of program assessment, curriculum development, and curricular alignment across departments and divisions
- Recruit, hire, orient, and supervise adjunct faculty teaching English courses across the institution, ensuring instructional quality and consistency
- Serve as the primary advocate for the English program in institutional planning, budget, and policy conversations
- Collaborate with academic leadership, including the Chief Academic Officer, to set the strategic direction of English programming at Greenville University
- Develop and maintain program policies, including those related to emerging issues such as artificial intelligence in writing instruction
- Represent the English program in accreditation, assessment, and institutional effectiveness processes as needed
We are seeking a potential colleague who will:
- Display a passion for Christ-centered higher education, integrating faith and learning into their field
- Desire to see students grow in their faith in Christ
- Instruct writing courses at multiple levels, including first-year composition and developmental writing
- Lead the development and ongoing strengthening of the university’s English curriculum with creativity and strategic vision
- Engage thoughtfully with questions about the role of artificial intelligence in writing instruction, helping to shape departmental conversations and institutional policies around AI in ways that are both academically rigorous and consistent with the university’s values
- Mentor and support adjunct faculty, fostering their professional development and sense of belonging within the Greenville University community
- Engage enthusiastically with undergraduate students in and outside the classroom
Qualifications
- Terminal degree required: MFA or doctoral degree in English, Creative Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated specialization in writing, broadly defined — including but not limited to composition, rhetoric, creative writing, or professional/technical writing
- Experience teaching college-level writing courses at a range of levels is required
- Demonstrated experience in or strong preparation for academic program administration, including curriculum development and faculty supervision
- A thoughtful and informed perspective on teaching writing in the age of artificial intelligence, including experience developing or adapting curricula, assignments, and policies that address AI tools in ways that prioritize authentic student learning and intellectual growth
- Experience hiring, supervising, or mentoring adjunct or part-time faculty is preferred
- Evidence of or clear potential for scholarly or creative publication in the candidate’s area of specialization
- Innovative technology skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
- Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate teaching and committed to serving as a role model for students within a Christian academic community
