Description
Greenville University is seeking an innovative visiting faculty member to serve as a full-time Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor (depending on credentials and experience) in English, beginning January 2027. This individual should have a specialization and experience in writing, broadly defined, including Composition, Rhetoric, Creative Writing, and/or Developmental English. In addition to courses in those areas, this instructor will have the opportunity to teach a range of undergraduate general education courses in writing and literature.
The department is particularly interested in candidates who bring a thoughtful, considered perspective on teaching writing in the current moment, including the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. We seek someone who can help students navigate what it means to develop as writers and thinkers in an era when the nature of writing itself is being actively contested and redefined.
The Humanities Division anticipates conducting a national search for a full-time, tenure-track position beginning Fall 2027. An outstanding visiting candidate may be considered for that position in accordance with university hiring policies and procedures.
Requirements
Full-time faculty load is 12 credit hours per semester, usually consisting of two to three general education courses and one or two upper-division courses.
We are seeking a potential colleague who will:
- Display a passion for Christ-centered higher education, integrating faith and learning into their field
- Desire to see students grow in their faith in Christ
- Instruct writing courses, including first-year composition and developmental writing
- Engage thoughtfully with questions about the role of artificial intelligence in writing instruction, helping to shape departmental conversations and policies around AI in ways that are both academically rigorous and consistent with the university’s values
- Engage enthusiastically with undergraduate students in and outside the classroom
Qualifications
- MFA or doctoral degree in English, Creative Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field. Candidates with a master’s degree and significant college-level teaching experience in writing will be considered.
- Demonstrated specialization in writing, broadly defined — including but not limited to composition, rhetoric, creative writing, or professional/technical writing
- Experience teaching college-level writing courses at a range of levels is strongly preferred
- A thoughtful and informed perspective on teaching writing in the age of artificial intelligence, including experience developing or adapting curricula, assignments, and policies that address AI tools in ways that prioritize authentic student learning and intellectual growth
- The successful applicant should be enthusiastic about teaching general education writing courses as well as upper-division courses in their area of specialization
- Innovative technology skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
- Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate teaching and committed to serving as a role model for students within a Christian academic community
- A vibrant personal Christian faith commitment is required, with a strong commitment to a broadly Wesleyan tradition
APPLICATIONS: Click Apply and include the following: (1) evidence of preparation for this position (a complete CV with degrees earned, teaching experience, and professional interests); (2) a statement of philosophy of Christian higher education; (3) a statement of personal faith journey and commitment; and (4) names and contact information for at least three professional references. Applications will be reviewed once all components have been received. The search will remain open until the position is filled.
