The NP will serve as a member of a comprehensive multidisciplinary team of health care professionals to deliver high quality, efficient, and coordinated care for pediatric and young adult patients hospitalized with gastroenterology conditions.

Direct patient care includes the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients on the inpatient Pediatric Gastroenterology service and consultation service. The NP provides patient and family education regarding the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, and ongoing management of Gastroenterology conditions during hospitalization and at discharge. Complex care coordination includes ordering medications, diagnostic studies, procedures, consultations, and nutritional support, as well as coordinating multidisciplinary care with nursing, case management, social work, pharmacy, nutrition, and other consulting services. The NP communicates closely with patients, families, and healthcare providers regarding treatment plans, procedures, test results, and discharge planning.

This population includes, but is not limited to, patients with inflammatory bowel disease, acute or chronic abdominal pain, feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, motility disorders, pancreatitis, liver disease, eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, short bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, nutritional deficiencies, and patients requiring enteral or par enteral nutritional support.

The major role functions for the Pediatric Gastroenterology NP include clinical practice, consultation, education, research, and leadership. In collaboration with the attending physician, the NP provides direct patient care, develops treatment plans, facilitates care transitions, and participates in discharge coordination for hospitalized patients. All care and communication will be appropriately documented in the electronic medical record.

The NP provides education to patients, families, healthcare providers, nursing staff, students, and fellows. Administrative functions include participation in quality improvement initiatives, development and revision of clinical policies and procedures, and efforts to enhance the efficiency, safety, and quality of inpatient care provided by the division.
