Why Choose to volunteer with Red Cross?

The program

Independent wellbeing check calls are a Red Cross workforce support service that are made by trained volunteers.  The purpose of the call is to check on and support the wellbeing of Emergency Service workforce personnel after engagement.

Trained volunteers use Psychological First Aid to support the wellbeing of the Emergency Service workforce. The focus of independent wellbeing check calls is on workforce wellbeing and linking people with appropriate support.  These calls provide a platform for the workforce to share experiences, receive support, and provide operational feedback and suggestions for improvement at the end of their engagement.

Independent wellbeing check callers are volunteers who care about supporting the wellbeing of other Red Cross personnel.  All independent wellbeing check callers should reflect the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross in their behaviour.

The opportunity

This is a key volunteer role to support the wellbeing of the Red Cross Emergency Services workforce, assist with the delivery and support of the Independent Wellbeing Check service.

For this role you will need good conversational skills and the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of people, including those with different lived experiences, abilities, and cultures.

You will be comfortable using computers and be able to learn the service’s web-based call management system.

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

The impact

Red Cross recognizes that working in the emergency services field can be both mentally and physically demanding and therefore aims to minimize the personal impact on volunteers by providing this valuable follow-up service.

Independent Wellbeing Checks (IWCs) are one of the tools Red Cross uses to ensure the support in returning to their normal routines by providing psychological first aid and promoting self-care over the phone. Red Cross is committed to continual improvement which sees the IWC team contribute to the identification and collection of thematic operational learnings and sentiment which inform review and improvement activities.
