Team Lead - Payments

Studio Graphene is an AI-native digital product studio that designs and builds digital products for ambitious companies around the world. Founded in 2014 and a certified B Corp, we are a team of over 100 designers, engineers, product managers and analysts across our offices in London, Delhi, Lisbon and Geneva.

For this role, Studio Graphene is hiring as the Employer of Record (EOR) for one of our clients. You will be employed by Studio Graphene in India and work as part of the client’s team on their products, with your day-to-day role and responsibilities set out below.

The client is a leading provider of SaaS solutions that empower companies to take payments securely, adhere to strict industry governance, and reduce significant business risks posed by non-compliance and data loss. They are integrated and resold by some of the world’s leading business communications vendors, as well as major payment service providers.

Location: 5 days working from Gurgaon Office

Working hours: 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM

THE OPPORTUNITY:

The client is establishing a new India engineering office, built around small, focused teams, each owned end-to-end by a Team Lead. You'll be the direct line manager of the engineers in your team and accountable for their day-to-day technical work and output, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, who oversees several Team Leads and teams across the office.

This role owns the payments processing service end-to-end, taken on from an existing team, with full responsibility for integrating new payment methods and gateways and keeping every existing integration operational.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Own your team’s service(s) end-to-end - architecture, build, deployment, monitoring and day-to-day operational health - within the established engineering standards.

• Make technical decisions within your domain, acting as the first line of technical judgement before anything reaches wider architecture review.

• Keep existing functionality stable while delivering new work in parallel.

• Make sure your team produces and keeps the evidence needed for PCI DSS and other compliance audits as a standard part of delivery.

• Stay hands-on, personally contributing to delivery of key initiatives.

• Ensure that AI is used throughout the development process to enhance productivity without sacrificing quality.

• Act as direct line manager to the engineers in your team, including regular 1:1s, performance management, day-to-day coaching and career development.

• Support your products along with your team, ensuring that there is proper cover out of hours.

• Work directly with the UK-based Product Manager to turn roadmap and requirements into a workable technical plan, and take charge of estimation and planning activities to build realistic plans.

• Produce technical designs for your team's work, present them to the Senior Engineering Manager for sign-off, and see them through to delivery as priorities or real-world issues change.

• Proactively flag technical risks and blockers to the Senior Engineering Manager before they become critical.

• Own the payments service end-to-end following handover from the existing team, including all live gateway integrations.

• Lead integration of new payment methods and payment gateways/providers as the roadmap requires.

• Keep all existing payment method and gateway integrations operational, monitored and incident-ready.

• Act as the team's ultimate authority on payment flows, gateway behaviour, and the practical gaps or inconsistencies in provider documentation.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU:

• Deep, hands-on expertise in payment processing, with detailed knowledge of 3DS authentication flows and the underlying processes.

• Practical working knowledge of MOTO (Mail Order/Telephone Order) transaction handling and its specific risk and compliance considerations, as well as other transaction types such as authorisation, capture, and refund.

• Hands-on experience integrating multiple payment gateways or providers into live payment environments, with first-hand experience with the practical problems of gateway integration work.

• Understanding of how PCI DSS applies to a payments processing service.

• Experience directly line managing engineers (1:1s, performance feedback, coaching and career development), or clear aptitude for it.

• Hands-on senior-level engineering background before or alongside this role.

• Strong C#/.NET experience in a production environment.

• Hands-on experience with serverless AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, DynamoDB, Step Functions, etc.).

• Experience owning a service end-to-end in production, not just contributing to one.

• Experience working in a fast-paced, regulated environment (PCI DSS, SOC 2, financial services or similar).

• Excellent written and verbal English, with a track record of working closely with UK/US teams across time zones.

• Experience producing and presenting technical designs to senior engineering stakeholders.

• Some prior team lead or mentoring experience, formal or informal

• Experience using AI-assisted workflows to improve engineering quality and productivity, and reduce delivery risk.
