Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Studies

Overview

Kimley-Horn's Greenwood Village, Colorado (CO) office is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies within our growing Power Delivery team in Denver.

In this role, you will lead EMT and dynamic studies for hyperscale data centers, utility-scale generation, BESS, and substation projects. You will also help establish modeling standards, study methodologies, and QA/QC practices, while working directly with clients, utilities, and equipment vendors.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Serve as the technical authority for EMT modeling and analysis.
• Develop modeling standards, study methodologies, and QA/QC practices.
• Track evolving utility, ISO, NERC, and IEEE requirements for large loads and inverter-based resources.
• Mentor engineers in EMT modeling, simulation, and analysis.

Data Center and Large Load Studies

• Conduct PSCAD studies for hyperscale data centers, including UPS systems, rectifiers, VFDs, on-site generation, and BESS.
• Evaluate large-load response to grid disturbances, including voltage and frequency ride-through, load tripping, and rapid load changes.
• Assess control interactions and subsynchronous phenomena, including SSR, SSCI, and SSO.
• Perform frequency-scan and impedance-based stability analysis as needed.

Transient Studies

Perform and review studies including:

• Temporary overvoltage (TOV)
• Transient recovery voltage (TRV) and RRRV
• Switching transients
• Transformer energization
• Capacitor bank switching
• Insulation coordination
• Fault response and load rejection

Modeling and Interconnection

• Review and integrate vendor-supplied EMT models, including black-box models, and verify model performance.
• Perform dynamic studies in PSS®E, PSLF, or similar tools and compare RMS and EMT results when required.
• Support interconnection studies and compliance with utility and ISO requirements.
• Apply applicable standards and requirements, including IEEE 2800 and NERC ride-through requirements.

Client Delivery

• Prepare and review technical reports.
• Present results to clients, utilities, and other project stakeholders.
• Respond to technical comments and support study review cycles.

Qualifications

Required

• 8+ years of power system study experience with significant EMT analysis experience.
• Bachlor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Advanced proficiency in PSCAD.
• EMT experience with inverter-based resources or large power-electronic loads.
• Working knowledge of PSS®E, PSLF, TSAT/VSAT, or similar tools.
• Strong understanding of transient and dynamic system behavior, converter controls, and fault response.
• Experience with interconnection or grid-compliance studies.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
• PE license or ability to obtain one within 12 months.

Preferred

• EMT study experience on hyperscale data center projects.
• Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering focused on power system transients, power electronics, or a related field.
• Experience with BESS, generation, and large-load hybrid systems.
• Experience with weak-grid or low-SCR systems.
• Python or other scripting experience for study automation.
• Publications or industry presentations related to EMT studies.
• Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or ASPEN.

Salary Range:

• $130,000 - $200,000 
• Eligible for Performance Based Bonus Compensation
