The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) is a people focused, award-winning, full-service consulting firm that offers a wide array of services including civil and geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture, surveying and construction support. Our talented staff of more than 650+ professionals deliver integrated planning, design, engineering and construction solutions.

Position Summary The Construction Inspector / AWS Certified Welding Inspector serves as an independent field representative of a civil engineering, construction materials testing, and special-inspection firm. The inspector observes construction activities, performs and coordinates required inspections and testing, and verifies that structural steel fabrication and erection, welded connections, bolted connections, and related construction work comply with the approved contract documents, project specifications, statement of special inspections, and project-specified edition of AWS D1.1/D1.1M. The role supports a large, complex construction project through timely field coverage, accurate and traceable reporting, prompt escalation of deficiencies, and professional coordination with the firm’s project manager, contractor, fabricator, testing personnel, Engineer of Record, owner, construction manager, and authority having jurisdiction. The inspector must remain impartial and work only within the firm’s contracted scope, assigned duties, certifications, and delegated authority.

Key Responsibilities

Authority and Responsibility

The inspector observes, tests, documents, and reports only the construction activities and locations actually covered within the firm’s contracted scope. Third-party inspection provides independent verification and does not relieve the contractor, subcontractors, fabricators, or installers of responsibility for quality control, code compliance, workmanship, sequencing, or correction of deficiencies. Unless expressly authorized in writing, the inspector does not direct construction means or methods; supervise contractor personnel; control production or site safety; perform survey layout; approve shop drawings, design changes, substitutions, deviations, or repairs; waive inspection or testing requirements; accept nonconforming work; certify unobserved work; stop work; or commit the firm to additional services. The inspector may advise the designated project representative of observed conditions and applicable requirements. Unsafe access, missed inspections, work concealed before inspection, suspected nonconformance, conflicting documents, and out-of-scope requests must be documented and promptly escalated through the established project chain of communication.

Physical Requirements

Work Environment and Schedule

Work is performed at fabrication facilities and on a large, active construction site with multiple contractors, simultaneous operations, restricted-access areas, evolving work fronts, heavy equipment, cranes, steel erection, noise, dust, welding fumes, weather exposure, and uneven surfaces. The position may be assigned to a dedicated project team for an extended duration and may require travel, early starts, nights, overtime, rotating shifts, or schedule changes to match fabrication, erection, and testing activities. Inspectors may be required to work extended hours, including shifts of up to 10 hours per day, and may frequently be required to work weekends to maintain required inspection coverage or catch up on inspections affected by project scheduling, access, or construction progress. The inspector must complete project badging, orientation, drug and alcohol screening, background checks, site-specific training, and other access requirements where applicable. Required personal protective equipment and the project health and safety plan must be followed at all times.
