Job Description:

Provides accurate and timely information to visitors and callers. Responsibilities include pre-certifying with insurance companies, filing, scheduling, maintaining records in the Electronic Medical Record system, processing patient specimens and providing direct patient care. This role assists providers with office procedures. Administrative tasks include scheduling appointments, billing, coding, and maintaining medical records. Clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs, documenting medical histories, preparing patients for exams, drawing blood, and administering medications under physician or advanced practice provider direction. Adaptability to varied tasks is essential.

What you will do

Certified Medical Assistant:

• Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
• Change dressings on wounds.
• Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
• Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
• Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests or admission.
• Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patients.
• Help physicians or physician assistant examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
• Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
• Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies and equipment.
• Collect co-pays, coinsurance, and past due balances and record transactions.
• Operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests.
• Perform general office duties such as answering telephones or completing insurance forms.
• Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
• Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or physician assistant.
• Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
• Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, and information such as test results in medical records.
• Schedule appointments for patients.
• Set up medical laboratory equipment.
• Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.

Medical Assistant:

• Greet and register patients arriving at office or clinic.
• Help physicians or advanced practice providers prepare patients for examination and treatment and assist with patient care tasks as instructed or needed.
• Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
• Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies and equipment.
• Operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests in designated clinic locations.
• Perform general office duties such as answering telephones or completing insurance forms.
• Collect copays, coinsurances or past due balances and record transactions.
• Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or physician assistant.
• Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.

Qualifications:

Certified Medical Assistant:

• H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
• Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants Required
• 1-3 years experience in a medical office Preferred
• Certified Medical Assistant Required
• Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days Required
• Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
• Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required

Medical Assistant:

• H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
• Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants Required
• 1-3 years experience in a medical office Preferred
• Computerized Physician Order Entry within 90 Days Required
• Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days Required
• Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
• Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
