MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Position Summary:

The Assistant Nurse Manager Educator (ANM Educator) – Perioperative Services provides clinical leadership, operational support, education, competency management, and staff development across the perioperative continuum, including the Operating Room (OR), Sterile Processing Department (SPD), Gastroenterology (GI), Interventional Radiology (IR), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT). The ANM Educator serves as an extension of perioperative nursing leadership and is accountable for structured orientation, ongoing education, competency validation, simulation, evidence-based practice, regulatory readiness, clinical practice standardization, and quality improvement across assigned services.

The role requires flexible presence across shifts and procedural areas to assess practice, provide coaching, validate competencies, support high-risk clinical events, and ensure education reaches staff based on operational need.

Duties:

Perioperative Education, Orientation & Competency

• Develop, implement, and evaluate structured orientation pathways for clinical staff across OR, SPD, GI, IR, PACU, and PAT.
• Assess learning needs using quality data, regulatory findings, competency results, staff feedback, new technology, new procedures, equipment changes, and evidence-based practice.
• Conduct routine in-services aligned with perioperative standards, infection prevention, medication safety, procedural safety, and regulatory updates.
• Coordinate annual competency validation, skills fairs, return demonstrations, remediation plans, and department-specific competency requirements.
• Lead or coordinate mock drills and simulation, including Code Blue, malignant hyperthermia, surgical fire, emergency response, and other service-specific scenarios.
• Develop and support preceptors and provide coaching in clinical judgment, communication, documentation, escalation, sterile practice, and professional development.
• Participate in hospital-wide new employee orientation and ensure completion of specialty-specific orientation and competency requirements.
• Maintain accurate education, competency, remediation, and regulatory-readiness documentation.

Operating Room Clinical & Quality Accountability

• Provide education and clinical practice support related to sterile technique, surgical safety, instrumentation, positioning, counts, specimen management, and perioperative documentation.
• Reinforce approved surgical safety processes and infection-prevention practices.
• Support onboarding and competency validation related to new surgical technology, equipment, and procedures.
• Monitor and provide education related to surgical site infection prevention, first-case on-time starts, case delays, turnover, and surgical throughput.
• Support preference-card standardization and staff education related to efficient supply and equipment utilization.

Sterile Processing Department (SOD) Accountability

• Support orientation, education, and competency validation for decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, transport, and instrument-management processes.
• Reinforce adherence to approved infection-prevention, manufacturer instructions for use (IFU), sterilization, and documentation requirements.
• Partner with SPD and perioperative leadership to identify instrument-processing gaps, recurring defects, missing instrumentation, and education needs.
• Support competency validation for equipment, sterilization processes, biological/chemical monitoring, and traceability documentation as applicable to assigned staff.
• Promote standardized communication and workflow between SPD and procedural departments to support case readiness and patient safety.

Gastroenterology (GI) & Interventional Radiology (IR) Accountability

• Develop and support orientation and competency pathways for procedural nursing practice in GI and IR.
• Provide education related to procedural safety, moderate sedation within approved scope and policy, patient monitoring, emergency response, medication safety, and post-procedure recovery.
• Support competency related to specialized procedural equipment and new technology.
• Reinforce infection-prevention, documentation, handoff, and pre-/post-procedure standards.
• Use quality findings, procedural delays, adverse events, and practice gaps to develop targeted education and remediation.

PACU Accountability

• Provide education and competency validation related to post-anesthesia assessment, airway management, pain and nausea management, hemodynamic monitoring, escalation, and discharge criteria.
• Support emergency readiness for post-anesthesia complications and clinical deterioration.
• Reinforce standardized handoff, documentation, recovery, and transfer/discharge practices.
• Monitor identified PACU quality and practice trends and implement targeted staff education

Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Accountability

• Support standardized PAT assessment, documentation, medication reconciliation, preprocedure testing, and readiness processes.
• Provide education related to identification and escalation of clinical risk factors that may affect procedural readiness or require additional evaluation.
• Reinforce patient education, pre-procedure instructions, and standardized communication with procedural departments.
• Use cancellation, delay, incomplete-workup, and documentation trends to identify education and process-improvement opportunities.

Clinical Leadership, Quality & Regulatory Readiness

• Serve as a visible clinical leadership and education resource across perioperative and procedural services.
• Conduct focused audits, identify clinical or competency variances, initiate corrective education within scope, and escalate trends and risks to nursing leadership.
• Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia, Nursing Education, Quality, Infection Prevention, Pharmacy, Risk Management, and other disciplines.
• Support staffing decisions by identifying competency and skill-mix requirements and escalating unsafe competency or patient-safety concerns.
• Participate in incident review, root cause analysis, performance improvement, policy implementation, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Maintain readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, CDPH, and other applicable accreditation and regulatory reviews.
• Support high-reliability practices, psychological safety, timely escalation, and a culture of continuous learning.

Operational & Financial Stewardship

• Support surgical and procedural throughput and reduction of avoidable case delays and cancellations.
• Promote supply stewardship, appropriate resource utilization, and preference-card standardization.
• Use competency-based onboarding and staff development to reduce practice variation, inefficiency, and avoidable overtime.
• Support safe adoption of new technology and equipment through structured education and competency validation.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education

• Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Preferred Education 

• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or master’s degree in related healthcare discipline preferred.

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years of acute-care Registered Nurse (RN) experience in the applicable specialty area.
• Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a unionized healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated ability to educate, coach, influence clinical practice, communicate effectively, and collaborate within a unionized healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated perioperative expertise with experience in one or more of the following: OR, PACU, GI, IR, PAT, or sterile processing interface.

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications

• Demonstrated clinical leadership experience as a Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Supervisor, Preceptor, Educator, or in an equivalent role preferred.
• Prior experience in nursing education, competency validation, simulation, performance improvement, orientation, nurse residency, precepting, staff development, and clinical leadership strongly preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation

• California Registered Nurse (RN) License.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate from the American Heart Association (AHA).
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificate from the American Heart Association (AHA).
• Los Angeles County Fire & Safety Card (required within 30 days of hire).
• Assault Response Competency (ARC) (required within 30 days of hire).
• Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification from the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) (required within 6 months of hire).
• Relevant specialty certification in post-anesthesia, gastroenterology, interventional/procedural nursing, or sterile processing is preferred when applicable to assigned scope.
