Description
Position Summary
The CNC Turning Operator 1 operates established CNC turning processes to produce conforming components while meeting assigned production requirements. The role performs safe loading and unloading, in-process measurement, material identification, traceability, and accurate job reporting within approved operating limits. This Level 1 position follows proven processes under guidance and develops proficiency before accepting independent assignments.
Key Responsibilities
•Operate established two-axis CNC lathes and other qualified turning equipment using released programs, approved setups, current travelers, and documented work instructions.
•Verify work order, material and revision identity, workholding condition, and required first-piece verification before production.
•Load and unload parts safely; verify proper seating and clamping in approved chucks, collets, or fixtures and protect finished surfaces.
•Monitor inserts and cutting tools, chip formation, coolant, and machine alarms; promptly report abnormal conditions.
•Measure diameters, lengths, shoulders, grooves, threads, and other specified features at the required inspection frequency.
•Recognize worn or damaged tooling and report the condition; obtain direction before changing offsets or replacing tools.
•Maintain part identification and traceability; accurately record production quantities, labor, inspection results, and scrap in the ERP/traveler.
•Stop and segregate suspect parts when tolerances, process stability, or product identity are uncertain; notify the appropriate resource.
•Perform assigned machine care and maintain a safe, clean, organized work area without bypassing machine safeguards.
•Run established jobs under guidance; request assistance with abnormal measurements, machine alarms, or tool conditions.
Execution Authority
•Operate assigned turning equipment only within demonstrated qualifications and approved operating instructions.
•Stop machining and contain potentially affected product when safety, traceability, or conformance is uncertain.
•Do not independently adjust tool offsets, replace setup tooling, or alter approved process parameters without training and explicit authorization.
•Do not modify released CNC programs, change setups or workholding, or independently change controlled processes.
•Refer setup failures, technical process changes, and nonconforming-product disposition to the Turning Supervisor, Process Engineering, or Quality as appropriate.
