Job Summary

The Carpenter fabricates, assembles, fits, and installs structural and light-gauge steel components used in prefabricated modular mechanical and electrical systems. This position works with structural steel, metal framing, metal studs, angle iron, channel, tubing, Unistrut, and related materials.

The Carpenter reads drawings, performs accurate layouts and measurements, operates fabrication equipment, and produces completed assemblies that meet project specifications, quality standards, and production schedules.

This is a fully on-site position. The employee will complete a minimum 90-day on-site training period at Epsilon Industries’ Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility and will receive a per diem of $500 per week during the training period. Upon completion of training, the position will transfer to and remain fully on-site at Epsilon Industries’ Oxford, Alabama facility.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Fabrication & Assembly

• Fabricate and assemble steel and metal components for modular mechanical and electrical systems.
• Work with structural steel, light-gauge steel, metal studs, angle iron, channel, tubing, Unistrut, and related products.
• Measure, lay out, cut, drill, grind, fit, square, level, and assemble components accurately.
• Construct frames, supports, platforms, racks, enclosures, and other modular assemblies.
• Perform basic fitting and preparation of steel components before welding or final assembly.
• Perform tack welding when properly trained, qualified, and authorized.
• Assist with installing completed components within modular units and other assemblies.
• Follow established fabrication sequences, procedures, and production requirements.

Drawings & Quality

• Read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, blueprints, dimensions, and material requirements.
• Verify measurements, layouts, dimensions, tolerances, squareness, level, and alignment.
• Confirm that materials and completed assemblies match approved drawings and specifications.
• Identify dimensional, material, drawing, or fabrication concerns before work proceeds.
• Report defects, discrepancies, and unclear requirements to the supervisor.
• Inspect completed work and correct deficiencies within assigned authority.
• Maintain consistent workmanship and quality standards.
• Support continuous improvement and reduction of material waste and rework.

Tools & Equipment

• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, saws, drills, drill presses, grinders, and other fabrication equipment.
• Inspect tools and equipment before use.
• Use tape measures, squares, levels, and other measuring devices accurately.
• Select the proper tools, materials, and equipment for assigned tasks.
• Report damaged tools, equipment malfunctions, and maintenance concerns promptly.
• Maintain tools and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.

Production & Teamwork

• Coordinate work with Welders, Sheet Metal personnel, Production employees, Quality, and supervision.
• Complete assignments according to established production schedules and priorities.
• Communicate material, drawing, tooling, quality, or production issues promptly.
• Assist with positioning, staging, and handling steel and fabricated components.
• Maintain accurate identification of parts and project materials.
• Work independently while supporting team and departmental objectives.
• Assist with training less-experienced employees when requested.

Safety & Housekeeping

• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Use proper lifting, material-handling, and equipment-operating techniques.
• Secure materials and workpieces before cutting, drilling, grinding, or assembly.
• Maintain awareness of sharp edges, hot work, pinch points, moving equipment, and other shop hazards.
• Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of unnecessary hazards.
• Participate in required safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training.
• Stop work and notify supervision when an unsafe condition is identified.

General Responsibilities

• Maintain regular and dependable attendance.
• Meet established safety, quality, productivity, and schedule expectations.
• Work overtime, alternate shifts, or weekends when required by production needs.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Education & Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• At least three years of experience in carpentry, steel fabrication, metal framing, structural steel, or a related skilled trade preferred.
• Equivalent experience demonstrating strong fabrication and mechanical skills may be considered.
• Manufacturing, fabrication, construction, or modular-construction experience preferred.

Technical Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, shop drawings, fabrication drawings, or blueprints.
• Ability to measure accurately using tape measures, squares, levels, and related tools.
• Strong understanding of layout, squaring, leveling, alignment, and fitting.
• Experience using common hand tools, power tools, saws, drills, and grinders.
• Basic knowledge of steel-fabrication and construction methods.
• Ability to safely handle and work with steel and metal products.
• Ability to identify dimensional or fabrication concerns.
• Basic mathematical skills involving measurements, fractions, dimensions, and angles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with structural steel or light-gauge steel framing.
• Experience working from detailed shop or fabrication drawings.
• Experience with metal studs, Unistrut, angle iron, channel, and tubing.
• Welding or tack-welding experience.
• Experience with modular construction, prefabrication, or mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (“MEP”) assemblies.
• Experience operating saws, drill presses, grinders, and related fabrication equipment.
• Forklift, overhead-crane, or rigging experience.
• OSHA 10-Hour or other recognized construction or manufacturing safety training.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed primarily in manufacturing, fabrication, sheet-metal, production, warehouse, and yard environments.
• Initial work and training will be performed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, followed by permanent assignment to the Oxford, Alabama facility.
• Regular exposure to noise, dust, fumes, sparks, sharp edges, machinery, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
• Required use of personal protective equipment in designated areas.
• Overtime, alternate shifts, early-morning work, or weekends may be required.
