Pharmacy Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

Technician works directly with the pharmacists to fulfill prescription medication orders and maintain inventory control.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Answer phone & assist customers. 
• Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist:
• Assist patients as required.
• Enter prescription information into the pharmacy computer system.
• Enter patient information into the pharmacy computer system.
• Contact all new patients for demographic and insurance info.
• Upon receiving new antibiotic scripts, contact patient immediately to inform them & process.
• Maintain updated patient profiles including allergies.
• Initiate communication with prescribers for clarification of missing prescription information as directed by the pharmacist and allowed under state and local law.
• Intake and typing of new and refill prescriptions.
• Accept refill requests, proactively contact patients to see if they are ready for refill.
• Work incoming documents and escribe queues.
• Fax, call or send Escribes for refill requests.
• Contact patients and MD offices as appropriate to resolve insurance claim issues.
• Resolve patient issues (with the exception of counseling)
• Be aware of changing AWP/Costs to ensure optimum reimbursement is obtained.
• Order and receive pharmacist approved medication orders from suppliers & add into pharmacy computer system.
• Inspect drug supply and storage areas for damaged, expired, recalled or unusable stock.
• Help manage/control inventory. 
• Overstock returns to Cardinal. 
• Outdates to Pharma Link
• Ensure inventory is stored properly.
• Process returns of medications not picked up after 7 to 10 days and return to stock.
• Count, measure, prepare and label prescriptions according to state and local laws.
• Clean pharmacy equipment.
• Contact patient(s) to notify prescriptions received, processed and ready to pick up.
• Obtain or arrange copay collection.
• Document all correspondence in Progress Notes and/or Billing Notes
• Identify need for prior authorizations, follow-up with insurance if needed.
• Comply with record-keeping and abide by state and federal laws.
• Ensure accreditation standards/objectives are being followed.
• Assist management with other tasks as requested.
• Pharmacist may delegate these tasks to technician:
• Data entry.
• Labeling of preparations and prescriptions.
• Retrieval of prescription files, patient files and profiles.
• Counting, weighing, measuring, and pouring of prescription or stock legend drugs and controlled substances, including the filling of automated medication system.
• The acceptance of an authorization to dispense medications pursuant to a prescribing practitioner’s authorization to fill an existing prescription that has no refills remaining.
• Organizing of or participating in continuous quality improvement related events, meetings, or presentations.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Attention to detail. 
• Abilit to accurately record computerized records.
• Team orientated.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Computer skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 1 year experience 
• Registration with the Pharmacy Technician Florida State Board of Pharmacy
• Experience in pharmacy practice or health care setting helpful.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Exerts up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly in lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. It involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
• Requires expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, visual and auditory acuity. 
• May require standing or frequent use of computer keyboard & sitting for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, audio visual, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
